5s methodology

What is 5s, really? It's a guide for solving problems. 5s is not a complete solution, it requires work on your part and provides a pattern for success.

A methodology can be described as a guideline for solving a problem. The guidelines could contain particular sets of procedures, tasks, methods, techniques, tools, phrases and visual reminders. In the 5s methodology the guideline pertains to sorting, organizing, cleaning, standardizing, and sustaining the workplace environment using a set of 5 Japanese words that begin with the letter “S”. These words: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke, describe a set of procedures, methods and tasks to eliminate waste and organize for effectiveness and efficiency. 5s is a cyclical methodology which includes the important task of sustaining the entire cycle to ensure continuous improvement in the workplace.
