Pipe Labeling Requirements And Placement

You need to label pipes, but you do not know where to start. We can help you with your pipe labeling project!

Miles and miles of piping wind through industrial facilities worldwide. Regulations and standards address the importance of pipe labeling so that workers and employees are able to have awareness of what materials are carried in those piping systems. Code compliance and a safe work environment is an important goal. Though it is suggested that all pipes have labeling, there are situations where it is required by ANSI/ASME standards that specific piping be labeled, such as pipes with hazardous contents, or when the contents of the pipes might affect emergency procedures. Also, if the flow direction /content destination is unknown, or if pipe flow needs redirection during maintenance, then labeling is also required.

When pipes are marked, it is important that the labels be placed in the correct locations and that labels should be adhered on all pipe segments. When there are long runs of piping the labels should be placed at regular intervals so identification is clear and easy to understand. On straight runs the labels should be placed as often as needed. Where pipes are too small to be labeled they should be marked with hanging tags and labels should be placed next to valves and flanges. Where pipes penetrate walls, floors or ceilings, labeling should be placed at both sides where the pipe enters and exits the wall, ceiling or floor. Next to any changes in pipe direction there should be pipe marking.

Pipe marking labels should always be placed in locations that are easily visible from a normal position of approach. The label would be placed directly facing the employee if the employee is on the same level as the pipe. The label would be placed on the upper side of the pipe if the worker has to look down towards the pipe and if the worker has to look up at the pipe it would be placed on the lower side of the pipe. Proper label placement is an important safety measure.

Accurate labels placed in the proper locations provide vital information that helps make your facility a safer workplace. Always keep updated records of your piping systems on file, and keep your facility safe and code compliant by labeling your piping systems correctly and inspecting them regularly.
