Industrial Pipe Labeling Maintenance

How many miles of pipe run in a large facility? Yes, miles. If you maintain a large facility, you know the importance of pipe labeling.

Industrial buildings have many applications for pipe use and often require miles of pipes to convey varied contents to numerous destinations. The design process for industrial piping systems is a complex process and may include preparing calculations for required flow, supply sizing, pipe sizing, fitting locations, fixture unit conversions, vent systems, waster systems, drainage systems, and needed equipment and accessories. Piping systems may include domestic water systems, supply water systems, waste water systems, gas piping systems, air supply systems, and storm water systems.

Plumbing engineers incorporate industry standards and guidelines in addition to following code requirements when they design industrial piping systems. In order to identify the various piping systems properly, labeling is needed and often required and needs to be properly maintained. Because hazardous materials may be flowing through miles of piping, ANSI/ASME A13.1 standards require piping be labeled to ensure that workers are made aware of potential hazards. Pipe contents, direction of flow, hazards posed, and other critical information such as temperature or pressure requirements, need to be identified on appropriately colored pipe markers and placed in easily seen locations. Toxic and corrosive fluids, flammable fluids, combustible fluids, fire-quenching fluids and compressed air must be properly labeled. Piping systems containing potable water, cooling water, boiler feed and other water, also must be properly labeled.

All labels need to be easily seen, even when pipes are located in areas that are difficult to access. Piping system labels need to be regularly inspected for deterioration. Labels that are subject to extreme conditions or chemicals are more prone to corrosion or wear and tear, needing frequent monitoring and replacement. Missing or damaged labels need to be promptly replaced. Proactive maintenance programs should include regular inspections of industrial piping systems in your facility.

Properly marking and maintaining the piping systems in your facility benefits your workplace. Properly labeled piping systems aid employees with system operations and maintenance. Accurate pipe label information also helps identify that correct hazard precautions are taken during repairs, maintenance and emergencies. Correct pipe marking is important for staying in compliance with regulations.
