ARROW LABELING AND MEDICAL GAS PIPE MARKING

Learn more about pipe labeling requirements for medical gases.

Facilities with pipes containing medical gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, helium, nitrogen, and other hazardous substances, are required to follow specific pipe labeling standards such as NFPA 99 from the National Fire Protection Association, CGA C-9 from the Compressed Gas Association, and ANSI/ASME A13.1 – Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The labeling requirements of these standards help to minimize the hazards that are associated with medical piping systems.

General pipemarking standard ANSI/ASME A13.1 – Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems, requires identification of pipe contents to be placed on pipes containing medical gases. ANSI/ASME A13.1 also requires flow direction of the medical gas pipe contents to be identified with directional arrow labeling indicating which way the pipe contents is moving.

NFPA 99 requires the use of specific size text on medical gas pipe labels and specific locations for placement of the medical gas piping label. NFPA 99 also requires that labels must be placed on medical gas shut-off valves with the statement: “Do not open or close valve except in an emergency”.

Under CGA-C9 the medical pipe contents pressure-per-square inch (PSI) must be identified on the medical pipe marking label. CGA-C9 also requires specific colors be used to label different medical gas pipes, such as the use of Green = Oxygen; Blue = Nitrous Oxide; Yellow = Air; Black = Nitrogen; Orange = Cyclopropane; Brown = Helium; etc.

Accurate use of the proper pipemarking and directional arrow labels on medical gas piping systems is critical to safety in the workplace and can help prevent potentially dangerous accidents and mistakes from occurring, such as the use of the wrong gas.
